Eyeshadow Looks That Look Great On Hooded Eyes

If you have hooded eyes, chances are you’ve experienced the frustration of spending a good half-hour recreating a popular eye look, only for it to disappear the moment you open your eyes — sigh. Thankfully, not all hope is lost. With just a few changes in application technique, you can still get the look you want and complement your unique eye shape.

As a matter of fact, there are plenty of eyeshadow looks that look stunning on hooded eyes. Check out these tried-and-tested techniques from seasoned experts themselves:

Smoldering & Smokey

While the technique itself is pretty universal, this look by Patrick Ta is especially flattering for those with hooded eyes.

The key to nailing this sultry look is to apply your darkest eyeshadow color closest to the lash line, diffusing the pigment as you work your way towards the crease. After that, use a transition shade to create a seamless gradient that fades from dark to light. For a lifting effect, sweep the same colors on your lower lash line, and blend upwards as you connect the eyeshadow to the outer corners of your eyes.

Finally, run a black pencil eyeliner along with the roots of your lashes and upper waterline. This really helps to define the eyes and also gives the appearance of fuller lashes.

Pop of Shimmer

Who says those with hooded eyes can’t rock a shimmery lid? This jaw-dropping look by Hung Vanngo is here to prove otherwise.

The trick to getting your eye makeup to show through — regardless of whether your eyes are open or closed — is by sweeping the product a bit higher than your natural crease. Additionally, Hung also recommends dusting the shimmer eyeshadow on your lower lids as well, which will make your eyes appear bigger and brighter.

60’s Classic

If you thought a winged liner wasn’t possible because of your hooded eyes, think again. With this technique, you too can achieve the highly coveted cat-eye.

To make sure the winged liner isn’t covered by your lid, simply look straight into your mirror (both eyes open and relaxed) as you draw each wing. Starting from the outer third of your eye, draw a thin line angled upward and outward. Then, once you’re happy with the shape you’ve created, extend the line towards the inner corner, making sure that the line thins gradually as you get closer to the tear duct. Remember: because hooded eyes naturally have less lid space to work with, always use thin strokes to keep the eyes looking as wide and open as possible.

Subtle Cut Crease

Celebrity makeup artist Nikki Wolff is the queen of effortless cut creases and shows us that gals with hooded eyes can pull it off too.

To recreate her signature look, start off by locating the natural contours of your eyes (a.k.a. the eye socket), and map out the cut crease with a neutral brown pencil liner. Layer a similar colored eyeshadow on top for added depth. Next, apply a bone-colored eyeshadow on the rest of the eyelid, and brighten up the inner corners of your eyes with a highlighting shade.

Open up your eyes even further by swiping a nude eyeliner along your waterline. And if you’re going for that elongated and feline appearance, opt for lashes that are longer on the outer corners — you’ll find that it goes best with cat eyes too!

Bold & Graphic

This popular e-girl trend was practically made for hooded eyes. Not only does it give the illusion of more lid space, but it’s also a fun way to inject some color into your eye makeup looks.

Similar to the previous look, start by outlining your desired shape with a cobalt eyeliner pencil and set the product with an eyeshadow in a similar hue. To bring balance to the eyes, define your lash line by tight-lining the upper waterline and adding generous coats of mascara to your top and bottom lashes. Optionally, you can also throw on some false eyelashes for a doe-eyed effect.
