First popularized by the military in the 30s and 40s, the undercut hairstyle has resurrected from the past and has now become a timeless haircut. For guys and gals who are used to having undercuts, this haircut is pretty easy to preserve. First-timers however may find it hard to master the art of maintaining and styling the undercut.
Here are a few tips and tricks to keep your undercut in tip top shape!

1. Go to a professional barber regularly
A professional barber will be able to cut your hair in a way that will prevent it from growing out disproportionately. You’ll know you got a good haircut when your hair still maintains its shape as it grows out. To prevent your hair from turning into a poof of frizz, go to the barber every 4–6 weeks. Some of the barbershops we recommend are Felipe & Sons, Back Alley Barbershop, and Titan 22.

2. Style as you please
With an undercut, the section of long hair needs to be styled properly so that your hair isn’t flat on your scalp. Undercuts aren’t limited to the perfect coif, so feel free to experiment with how you want to style the top layer.

3. Know your products
With a variety of hair products available for men, you will be able to find the perfect products for you that will leave you with your desired look. There are products that will give you a matte finish or a shiny finish as well as products that will add texture or volume to your hair.
– Pomade will hold your hair in place and add shine to your top layer. Best used when your hair is damp.
– Wax works best on dry hair. This will give your hair a more natural finish. Hair wax is great for more texture and volume.
– Gels give you maximum hold and loads of shine when applied to damp hair. This is your best bet when you want to work that slicked back look.

4. Know your tools
While working the product into your hair with your fingers is the best way to apply hair products, you need to be able to ensure that your hair will keep its hold. One way to do so is through expanding your arsenal of tools.
– Combs are great for untangling your hair and working the product into your hair more.
– Blow dryers are great if you’re in a rush. Try blow-drying your hair with your head flipped over for added volume.
– If you like it when your top layer is straight, the greatest way to do so is with a hair straightener.
If you like how your top layer looks without any product, then don’t hesitate to rock that look. Ultimately, you want to be sporting the hairstyle that suits you and makes you feel confident. As the saying goes, “if you look good, you will feel good”.
