Although getting a mani-pedi at a salon can be a very therapeutic experience, sometimes we just don’t have the extra cash to blow on treats like getting our nails done by a professional. The girl on a budget has to occasionally DIY a couple of her beauty regimens, including pedicures. If you want to do your own toe-nails but you’re not sure how, follow these easy steps to prettify your feet and show them off in a stunning pair of open-toed heels today!
You will need:
• foot tub
• foot soak
• nail clippers & file
• nail buffer
• cuticle oil
• nail polish (base coat, color, top coat)
• toe separator
• moisturizer
Step 1: Cleanse and Exfoliate
Immerse your feet in a foot bath with an aromatic foot soak. Not only will it cleanse the skin on your feet, it offers a sweet scent, while removing any unpleasant odors from your feet. You can also use a foot scrub to exfoliate any dead skin making your feet look smoother and feel softer!
Step 2: Cut and Shape
Trim and file your nails to the desired length and shape. While curved nails suit small or short toes, square shaped nails look better on lanky toes.
Step 3: Smooth
Use a buffing block of successively finer grit. Start buffing with the grainiest side to smooth out any ridges and end with the fine side to give your nails a shiny surface.
Step 4: Paint
Put on your toe separator. Start painting your nails with a sheer base coat which serves as a clean slate for you to apply the color coat. After the base coat dries, apply a thin layer of color starting in the center of your nail and then moving on to the sides. Before applying a second coat of color, ensure that the first coat has completely dried. You don’t want your nail polish to look clumpy! After applying a second thin coat let the polish dry completely before putting on the sheer top coat. The top coat helps to conceal any bumps or pits on the nail, giving it a smooth finish.
Step 5: Oil
After your nail polish has dried, place a drop of cuticle oil on the cuticle of each of your toes. This is to prevent dry skin from peeling off in the cuticle area, which is pretty common.
Step 6: Moisturize
End your pedicure by massaging some moisturizer into your feet. The skin on the feet is prone to dryness and cracking so it’s important to keep it sufficiently hydrated.
