How To Keep Your Makeup Fresh After a Long Flight

Keeping your makeup fresh and intact during and after a long-haul flight is no easy feat. Being stuck on a plane in highly-pressurized air for hours can bring on a whole host of beauty problems — dry skin, tired eyes, cracked lips, smudged eye makeup, and limp hair. What’s a girl to do?

How To Keep Your Makeup Fresh After a Long Flight

Luckily, we’ve gathered a few tips that will have you looking fresh as a daisy even after you’ve disembarked:

Bare It All

Your face, that is. If you don’t want to bother with the hassle of removing your makeup on a red-eye flight (because you ARE going to remove it, right??) or contend with smudged eyeliner or lipstick, leaving your face makeup-free is the best way to go, because it allows your skin to breathe, thereby preventing clogged pores and acne breakout.

But if walking around without makeup is out of the question for you, then at least keep it minimal — with sunscreen, tinted moisturizer and lip balm to keep your skin and lips well hydrated throughout your flight.

    Dry Shampoo is Your Friend

More often than not, your hair after a long flight becomes limp and flat due to the grease that your scalp produces to compensate for the dryness in the air. To counter this, all you need is a bottle of dry shampoo. Just squirt some onto your scalp and rub gently, and voila! Instant voluminous hair.

    Banish Puffy Eyes

Dry air can result in tired-looking eyes. If you’re not getting any shut-eye on the plane, ask for some ice cubes from the air stewardess. Wrap them in a handkerchief or serviettes, then press them gently against the under-eye areas. This can help to soothe your eyes and reduce unsightly eye-bags.

    Hydrate your skin

When flying, the atmospheric conditions at high altitudes can result in dehydrated, dry skin. To avoid getting off the plane with dull, tired skin, apply a water-based (oil-free) moisturizer to avoid clogged pores that can lead to an acne breakout. Water-based moisturizers also provide a better, smoother canvas for more even base makeup.\

    Drink Up!

Healthy skin is not just about moisturizing the skin; it’s also about keeping your body hydrated. So make sure you drink more water (or unsweetened fruit juices) before, during, and after your flight. Fizzy drinks can cause bloating, alcohol, tea and coffee are diuretics that worsens dehydration and make you thirstier.

    Catch Some Z’s

A flight can be the ideal time to catch a quick nap or, if you’re doing a red-eye, an actual slumber. After all, you will look more refreshed if you are properly rested! Stow away an eye mask if you need complete darkness to sleep, and never underestimate the usefulness of a neck rest.

    Maintain Blood Circulation

Poor circulation can lead blotchy, blemished skin. If you find staying in your seat for hours torturous, get up and move every hour or so, or do simple stretching exercises such as flexing your ankles in an up-and-down and circular motion or rolling your shoulders. It will do your complexion more good than you’d expect!

    Touch Up After Touching Down

You’ve touched down now, so there’s no reason to look like a walking corpse. After giving your face a good cleanse, apply a fresh layer of BB cream or tinted moisturizer to even out your complexion, then dab on some blusher for a radiant glow!
