Concealers are amazing. They mask and address everything from ugly skin discolorations down to unsightly scars. They come in a variety of colors, each meant to address a different type of skin concern. A beginner shopping for concealers might even be surprised to see shades of purple, pink, yellow and green.

So before you head on over to the makeup counter to purchase this wonder product here’s a quick and easy guide to help you figure out which shade works best for your concerns.

Color Correct Like a Pro—Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Take a look at the Color Wheel below. Wondering how this wheel works? It’s easy. Hues opposite one another cancel each other out.

So the first step would be to look at your skin and figure out which areas need correcting.

Green

Reach for green concealer if you want to cancel out any redness in your skin. From pimples to skin diseases like Rosacea, Eczema and even sunburns.

Yellow

Yellow is the master of all color correctors. If you’re thinking of investing in only one shade of concealer, this would be it. Ever wondered how the Kardashians pull off flawless skin? This color corrector also disguises dark circles, redness and even brightens your complexion.

Orange/Red

Instagram makeup gurus have been raving about orange and red concealers. Orange correctors are used to counteract the color blue. So get ready to say sayonara to those dark bags under your eyes.

Pink

Pinks eliminates brown shades. This hue helps to camouflage age spots, sun spots, acne scars and looks great on lighter skin tones.

Purple

A lot of people are dumbfounded by this color. Sallowness and yellow complexions can be corrected by purple concealer. As a bonus, purple concealer gives off a brightening effect to skin.

Other Color Correcting Tips:

1. Avoid that ‘cakey’ look

To avoid having that ‘caked up’ look, choose high-quality blendable products.

2. Prep your skin

Make sure your skin is moisturized. Do lather on your favorite primer before you apply your color correcting concealer.

3. Apply regular concealer after correcting

After blending in the color corrector with a makeup sponge or brush, apply regular concealer as you normally would.

4. Apply after foundation

Some problem areas may be addressed using foundation alone. So best to apply color correcting concealers after you’ve applied your foundation.
