Leather looks are ruling the runways this season and it’s right about time to get in on the trend. Spawned from urban street fashion, leather has now evolved into a high-fashion staple. The key to looking chic in leather is to make sure that it looks classy and not tacky à la bikers and hookers.
While we often get stylespo from celebrities, it’s important not to channel their looks blindly, because, let’s face it — celebrities make fashion mistakes too. Here are five celebrity OOTDs: both HOT and NOT.

HOT

Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad keeps the leather to a minimum as she simply complements her outfit, consisting of wide-leg trousers, a studded belt and a white top, with a leather jacket. Complementing your look with one leather piece is a great way to incorporate leather into your outfit without risking leather overkill.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale has absolutely nailed it with this look. The leather dress, cinched at the waist with a belt, is of a modest length which keeps the look sophisticated while flaunting her curves. The open-toed gladiator heels, clutch purse and her sweet hairdo with bangs, add a tad of femininity to the otherwise edgy look.

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley shows us that leather doesn’t always have to be black. In matching olive green separates, she chooses to reveal just a sliver of skin at her midriff for a touch of sex appeal. She takes a risk with the unconventional color and silhouette but pulls it off perfectly.

Miley Cyrus

While Miley’s high-waist leather ankle-grazer pants are cute, her barely-there bandeau top gives the outfit a trashy vibe. When wearing leather, keep the skin show to a minimum — it’s really easy to look trashy in leather.

Leighton Meester

Although Leighton Meester isn’t usually one to make bad fashion choices, this outfit is one of the rare occasions where she got it all wrong — dress AND makeup.*cringe* Her leather dress is two inches too short to be comfortable at all and her makeup, red lipstick and heavy eyeliner, is bordering on ghastly. When wearing leather, ensure that your makeup isn’t too heavy or you just might end up channeling a hooker.
