It’s ‘As If!’ we’re in Cher Horowitz’s closet.

More than two decades after its release, Clueless (1995) continues to be our pop culture’s behemoth. It isn’t just a movie at this point, it’s a language.
It’s been more than 25 years since the iconic Cher Horowitz burst into our lives and influenced a whole generation with her wit, charm, and, most importantly, her fashion sense. Clueless is now a cult classic for its amazing clothes, hilarious one-liners, and incredible ’90s slang (we should really bring back “buggin’”).
While we can’t all have the funky computer Cher had to pick out her outfits, we have Monki to thank for timeless pieces that give major Horowitz vibes. We’ll never fall into fashion victims or ever be, in Cher’s words, “ensembly challenged” in these outfits.
Break it Brown

Walking towards school in her collared long-sleeved top, vest, and skirt is Cher with her file case in hand. One look and you already know she’s the ideal preppy school girl ready to face the day. This outfit combination has got to be one of our top favorites from the movie because of how striking yet simple the outfit combination is. What makes this look so enticing is in spite of the use of simple pieces, there is an impact on the color and material combination of the clothes — it’s all in the details.
In this outfit, Cher wore different clothing textures: crisp blue long-sleeve button-down with a knit brown vest over. Her mini skirt was a corduroy brown with white buttons running down the front.
There are so many things we can learn from this outfit: one is playing with the colors such as the soft blue and milk chocolate-brown combo. Another by the texture play, a crisp top, knit, and corduroy. The other is the continuity of details. In her outfit, the button details will be our reference. Using a button-down, continue the details with a button-down skirt to put together your look, whatever color and textures you’re wearing.
If you’re daring, add that sweater vest. You know you want to.

So-duh Pop

Take a sip of this!
In the movie, Cher had an oversized red plaid blazer with a subtly matching red plaid dress of the same length. With a black bonnet and black knee-high socks to put the look together. Don’t fret, we can totally make do even in this tropical country. The secret to why this outfit is one of her iconic looks is in the pattern play and the cut of your clothes.
For now, let’s skip on the cropped outer pieces. Cher’s coat has a more boxy shape, which falls well nearing the hem of her skirt. The outfit looks seamless because the pieces beneath complement the main interest piece: the coat. To get this, fix on a blazer and opt for a large, long, and light piece instead of a heavy coat. Find a skirt or a dress that has a similar color and pattern to the blazer, and hopefully, it has a similar, or close to, length of the blazer. Voilà! Stylish and smart layers without the fear of the heat.
And hey, whatever your choice of drink is, it’s going to work with your outfit just as good as Cher’s.

Sage Yes to the Dress

With how adorable this outfit is, we couldn’t forget to include this in the list. When Cher was shopping in the mall, she popped out in this beautiful sage body-hugging dress with the cutest little puff sleeve. It’s such a stand-out — it’s simple, sweet, flirty. What else could you ask for?
This has got to be the easiest to replicate since baby doll dresses are all the rage again. It’s so 90’s, but at the same time a timeless piece you can play around with. Make it casual with a small bag and sleek simple sneakers for a go-to look, or pop on some strappy sandals for an easy-breezy look. It’s so easy to wear this to anything — brunch, a quick mall trip, or even a date.
Also, take this as your sign to buy yourself a green dress. Sage is the best way to slowly ease in some green into your wardrobe because of its soft hue. There’s a shade of green that looks great on everybody! It’s all about finding the right brightness and a specific shade of green. If it helps, start with sage. It’s so calming to the eyes, and the color fits right into any occasion — from casual to semi-formal.
No Sweat — Literally

If there’s something for us to learn from in this lineup of outfits, we’re totally taking on the black and white sporty layers. Cher’s outfit is so doable: white top, black tank, and black biker shorts. We’re sure this is something you’ve already got. So if you want to amp up the look to wearing beyond PE class or waiting idly by the fence, here’s what we’ve got.
Black and white tend to look plain. To make the look more interesting, use a white top with fascinating details. Swap a plain white t-shirt with tops that have some frill, or maybe with textured material like crepe so that the contrast with a strappy little black dress pops a lot more.
Did you know you can go over the top with simple and plain pieces? What’s great about this outfit combination is that you can swap the layers. Show off the charming points of your top by wearing it over the black dress so it ends up as a top and skirt look. This way, your different clothing pieces have their own time to shine.

Quintessent-Cher

Of course, the quintessential Cher look that you’ve probably been waiting for: a matching plaid blazer and skirt. It isn’t the iconic Clueless outfit if it isn’t yellow! This does not only say classy, preppy, fashionable, but it screams Cher Horowitz all over it.
What makes this outfit so iconic is the use and play of monochrome and matching patterns. In Cher’s iconic outfit, she’s wearing a bright sunshine yellow plaid blazer and mini skirt combo. Underneath the blazer, she keeps the monochrome vibe with a matching plain yellow vest. With the bright colors, she keeps it clean as it flows down with knee-high white socks for elongation and elegance.
This has become an iconic outfit many years later after the 1995 release of the movie. With everybody aware of the fashion icon Cher Horowitz has become, we found a way to still totally rock the look without seeming costumey, too.
In Cher fashion, it’s all about using the same color and pattern as a whole monochrome look for that outstanding and head-turning impact when entering a room. Alternatively, you can dress the separate pieces. Keep the outfit clean by using the colors in the plaid pattern to complement the whole look, or go for a whole new color to add a completely new vibe.
We don’t have to wear Alaïa pieces for us to look just as breathtaking as Cher. As long as we have her confidence, ferocity, sweetness, and playful personality, we can rock whatever we’re wearing. Hopefully, these outfit tips helped, and in the words of Cher Horowitz herself, “totally based on my powers of persuasion, you proud?”
