In the Friends episode The One With Joey’s Dirty Day, Joey and Ross presented four phases of going through a breakup. In their version, sulking in sweatpants and going to happy hour were few of the phases a person goes through before finally being able to move on. The traditional model may involve a little of both but may be a bit more complicated than that.
Although the guys from Friends have gained additional recognition for their model, the Kübler-Ross model for stages of grief and mourning is still the most famous. It consists of five stages namely Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Sadness, and Acceptance. Here at the HQ, we understand that it isn’t easy letting go of the person you once thought was the one. Because of this, we’ve put together a list of songs you can include in your breakup playlist to help you go through each stage.
1. Denial
Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea — Problem
No! It can’t be over can it? The reality of you and your significant other no longer being together is creeping in. What do you do? Listen to Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea, and take in their words. You’ve got one less problem now that s/he’s gone.

2. Anger
Gotye ft. Kimbra — Somebody That I Used To Know
You’re no longer an item but you once talked about being friends even after you break up. What’s s/he doing now? Pushing you away and giving you a cold shoulder? Together with Gotye and Kimbra, let out all your anger for the pain and suffering your ex has been making you feel.

3. Bargaining
Around this time, you’ll start questioning “what if?”. You’ll wonder what if you did things differently? Would it have lasted longer? It’s normal to question things like these but unless a mutual agreement to work things out is made between you and your ex, you will be left bleeding. Learn from Shawn Mendes as you loop Stitches on your playlist.

4. Sadness
You’ve made it this far. You can’t turn back now. Remind yourself how much of a strong woman you are and press play for Survivor by Destiny’s Child. Wish your ex the best and hang in there because it will all be over soon.

5. Acceptance
Let it be known that you can find someone better than your ex. Celebrate a fresh start with a breakup anthem by the one and only Queen B.

As a bonus, here’s another song you can put on repeat until it becomes true…
Demi Lovato ft. Cher Lloyd — Really Don’t Care
