Great Minds Think Alike

Starting as a made-to-measure children’s shoe boutique in 1945 by Céline Vipiana, the store quickly grew in number. By 1960, the brand was not just only producing Celine shoes but also added women's ready-to-wear pieces to its collection. In 1963, Vipiana started a female shoe line and then a year after launched the label’s first fragrance. By 1966, leather accessories such as Celine wallets, bags, and belts came into being and by 1973, Vipiana made a major change with the logo, replacing it with the intertwining Cs inspired by the Arc de Triomphe. With this came the signature Celine Triomphe bag. In 1987, the brand was bought by the home of distinguished fashion houses, LVMH; eventually becoming a part of the luxury conglomerate in 1996. A year later, Vipiana died and she was immediately succeeded by Michael Kors as creative director. Until his exit in 2004, Kors used his sportswear sensibilities, as he featured skin-skimming dresses, preppy cashmere tops, and Celine caps. In 2008, the label was once again catapulted to the spotlight after Phoebe Philo presented an elegant and precise take on Vapiana’s minimalist aesthetic. Now, under the helm of Hedi Slimane, the label sees a change with an accent-less Celine logo and an expansion of its menswear.
